Learn the Caribbean Calypso and Brazilian Baion

Master drummer and world percussionist Alex Acuña breaks down the Calypso and Baion— two popular Latin rhythms— and applies them to the drumset. Both rhythms incorporate double stroke patterns between the snare drum and cowbell with the hi-hat on the upbeats and syncopated bass drum parts. A variation of the Baion also features an application of flam taps orchestrated between the ride cymbal and snare drum. The effect is flowing, more linear grooves that are uniquely different from the back-beat focused rhythms of mainstream pop and rock styles.
