Learning to Internalize the Melody

Internalizing the melody, along with a deep understanding of the form and rhythmic structure, is one of the most important parts of learning a song. As world-renowned drum educator Ed Soph points out in today's Focus Point, this is because the melody serves as the musical foundation for keeping time, soloing or "comping" for another soloist. For more lessons from Ed Soph, check out his full-length artist course "Jazz Improvisation," available in the DC shop. (From the Drum Channel Course"The Role Of The Drummer In A Rhythm Section".)
